Specimens of Calamites from Marles-les-mines, Pes-de-Calais, France. They have been dated to the Carboniferous period, Westphalian. These spore bearing plants existed during the Carboniferous and Permian periods approximately 250 to 360 million years ago. They belong to the plant family of Horsetails and they exploited humid, damp environments such as river banks and coal swamps. Calamites trunks are widely recognisable due to their ribbed and bamboo-like appearance, some grew up to 20 m in height. These samples are an ideal teaching aid but they would also be a wonderful addition to any fossil collection. Specimens are supplied in a 2" x 2" white card tray with an information label.
