Epidote crystal sheaths from Madagascar, exhibitnig a deep rich green colouration and the expected vitreous lustre when viewed from certain angles of light. This mineral specimen exhibits the high quality aspects of epidote such as the prismatic crystals and green to black colour. Clusters such as this are sometimes known as 'fans' and it is easy to see why. the mineral, epidote was named in 1801 by Rene Just HaǬy, a prominent French mineralogist and founder of the MusǸe de MinǸralogie in Paris, France. The name is derived from the Greek word Epidosis, which mean "increase" in reference to the crystal characteristic of one longer side at the base of the prism.
