These fish scales were deposited on the deep sea floor during late cretaceous times and were contained within a calcareous ooze which later formed chalk. The species from which these fish scales originated is undetermined but they are preserved within a chalk matrix and are supplied within a small plastic bag with an information label. Naturally the size of the fish scales varies anywhere between 1 and 8 mm and each 5 x 4 cm chalk piece contains numerous scales.
