Specimens of iridescent goethite found in Italy. Specimens are approximately 3" x 2" in size and are supplied fixed to a plastic display stand with a information label. Goethite is a relatively common mineral, and is often a matrix material for other mineral. While goethite is usually a dark metallic colour these specimens are iridescent giving them a beautiful rainbow like appearance. Goethite is an iron bearing hydroxide mineral, often black in colour with a metallic lustre, very good quality specimens will even look polished when held under light. Similar in composition and structure to hematite, goethite is a dense mineral, and can form with a botryoidal crystal habit, while these particular specimens do in some ways show a botryoidal habit, they crystals have formed very small, making the mineral specimens appear wire like.
