Samples of lapis lazuli from Afghanistan that vary in colour from light blue to dark blue with occurrences of white quart and minor pyrite. This mineral is highly prized due to its rarity and vivid blue colour. It has been a highly sought after commodity for centuries for antiques, jewellery and paint pigments. It's most famous use is perhaps that in Tutankhamun's mask, where lapis lazuli was used for the kings eyebrows and beard. It is still highly prized to this day, due to it's rarity and is used for making a variety of carvings. Although it is widely known as a mineral or gemstone, it is in fact a metamorphic rock, the main constituent mineral is lazurite which give the sample its blue colouration. Specmens are available in various sizes and supplied in a card tray with an information label.
