Pedinopariops brongniarti trilobite fossil of upper Devonian age, collected in Mauritania, Africa. This specimen is enrolled which is a common trait of this particular trilobite species. Enrolling was a defensive mechanism which many trilobite species used in order to protect the exposed, soft body on the underside of their shell. Due to its laterally facing compound eyes it is thought that this species spent much of its time at the sea surface, at this level it could see incoming predators, preventing attack from above. This specimen is 2.5 cm in diameter and is supplied in a small plastic bag with an information label attached.
