Rare eclogite thin section slides cut from our Norwegian eclogite hand specimens. Eclogite is a rare metamorphic rock, composed of mainly two minerals, reddish-brown almandine pyrope garnet and the green sodium rich pyroxene, Omphacite; our thin sections exhibit this clearly. Other minerals, such as kyanite may also be present. Isotope dating of the Norwegian eclogites in the 1970s & 1980s indicates they are Early Palaeozoic ( 450-400 million years ) and this suggests they formed during the Caledonian orogeny. This material was collected by staff from Almenning, Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.
