Orthoceras are ancient nautiloid cephalopods that existed during the mid-Ordivician period, around 370 million years ago. Nautiloids are known for their distinct spiral shell, while orthoceras possess a long, straight one instead. However, orthoceras shells still retain the distinct chambers, connected by a siphuncle and separated by walls called septa.
