Graptolites were simple colonial organisms, and are commonly used as zoning fossils as unique species are only found in certain geological periods, overall, the family lived right from the late Cambrian period to the Carboniferous period. They were colonial animals, numerous members living together and simply floated through the sea whilst filter feeding. They are always easily recognised by children to professionals because they almost always look like scratched etchings on a black matrix.
