Plant Fossils
Plant fossils are just as important as animal fossils as they give us a unique glimpse into the flora of the past, which the fauna of the time often fed on. Plant fossils allow geologists to interpret the flora or previous geological periods, this feat is easily done because plants, just like now, were wide spread and numerous all around the world and in a variety of environments. They have existed on land since the Ordovician period, over 480 million years ago, and as marine matter before that. Without the colinisation of land by plants, we humans along with all land living animals would simply not exist. Browse this section of our site to view various plant fossil specimens such as calamites found locally to wood and twigs from Indonesia to Madagascar.
