  • Lepidolite (Botryoidal) £28.00 ex VAT

Lepidolite mica mineral specimens which are members of the mica group of minerals, specimens tend to have a lilac colouration, however, grey and rose are also colours which the mineral can be found in. It is often found in granitic rocks such as pegmatites as well as quartz veins, greisens and granites in general, where high temperatures are present. It’s lilac purple colouration have resulted in it being sought after as a gemstone in modern times, however, it is chemicallly important for modern technology as it is a secondary source of lithium, which is the main element present in almost all rechargeable batteries today such as phone batteries, tablets, controllers and more. It is also a major sources of the rare alkaline metals caesium and rubidium which are respectively used in various electrical components, accurate clocks, oil drilling, fireworks and more.

These particular mineral specimens of lepidolite mica exhibit a botryoidal crystal habit, in which the fine crystals have grown to appear as a ‘bubbling’ mass. The surface is smooth and is purple in colour. They come from Minas Gerais, Brazil and each specimen will be supplied in a card tray with an information label.

  • Molybdenite – Norway £1.00 ex VAT

Specimens of molybdenite in a feldspar matrix from Buskerud in Southern Norway. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) otherwise known as Molybdenite is the primary ore of the rare earth metal Molybdenum. This element rarely occurs in pure form in nature and it is from minerals like molybdenite that it can be extracted. The mineral is often formed in hydrothermal veins. In recent years it has become an important factor of alloy production, particularly that of steel and stainless steel. The mineral is similar to Graphite, both in lustre and habit – molybdenite also leaves behind residue when touched (although this is harmless). This interesting property is a result of the molecular structure of the mineral, in which one molybdenum atom is sandwiched between two sulphur atoms, which is repeated in layers, allowing the individual layers to move over each other in the same way a conveyor would. Samples are supplied in a white card tray with an information label. A must have addition to any mineral collection.

    Nepheline £2.50£10.00 ex VAT

Stunning Nepheline crystals from Tafilalet, Morocco. Nephaline is a rare feldspathoid mineral that has a hexagonal crystal system.
