Igneous Rocks
Igneous rocks have originated from the consolidation of magma within the earth. They consist of tightly interlocking crystals of a variety of minerals. When the magma cools slowly, crystals are able to grow to a large size and a typical coarse grained rock such as granite is produced. When rapidly cooled, for example if the magma is located close to or even on the earths surface, finer grained rocks are formed such as basalt. In this section, you will find a range of igneous rock specimens from the UK, Norway and the world.
