Specimens of agate within basalt from Barras, Kincardineshire, Scotland. Agate is a common silica mineral and a variety of chalcedony, usually forming within the cavities of volcanic rocks. Agate is comprised of banded fibrous chalcedony, the crystals of which can be quite difficult to see resulting in agates classification as having a cryptocrystalline habit. The banding within the agate is a result of changing translucency within the mineral, these bands may also vary in colour if other minerals are present. These samples of agate have a red to white colouration and have in filled the cavities of basalt. Specimens are supplied in a white card tray with an information label.
