An andesite slide, a volcanic rock found in the Andes Mountains of South America. It has an intermediate, fine-grained groundmass and occasional phenocrysts of plagioclase feldspar. Andesite is an extrusive rock with a composition between rhyolite and basalt. It is similar to diorite and contains 52-63% silica, as well as pyroxene (augite) and feldspars (plagioclase). Andesite lava has moderate viscosity, resulting in thick lava flows and domes. This sample was collected from Borrowdale in the Lake District, UK, and is from the Late Ordovician period. The glass andesite slide measures 46 x 27 mm and comes with a protective card sleeve and label, making it ideal for microscopy, petrography, and education.

Diorite rock specimens from Cockermouth, Cumbria, is an intrusive igneous rock from the Ordovician period with a coarse, phaneratic texture composed of plagioclase feldspar, biotite mica as well as hornblende with intermediate chemistry. Found with the Skiddaw group, the rock samples are more suited for serious collectors and higher level education to describe the chemistry and mineralogy of various igneous groups. Available in 3 sizes and supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Lignite thin section slide. Lignite coal and indeed all other varieties of coal are classed as organic sedimentary rocks. It has a high carbon content 25 – 35% & a moisture content up to 66%. The high volatile component of lignite is clearly reflected in the thin section view, particularly when compared with those of higher grade coals.

Hornfels thin section microscope slide exhibiting a dark colour and a characteristic none crystalline form. Fine grains fit together like the fragments of a mosaic, this is often referred to as rough pavement or pavement structure. Larger quartz clasts are visible but these have recrystallised to form a fine, interlocking mosaic of quartz within the original grain cast.

Welded tuff thin section slide exhibiting a jumbled mass of irregularly sized broken clasts held in situ by finer ash particles which have become welded together. This material was collected from Cumbria, the original rock is likely rhyolite, and indeed in hand specimen the tuff almost still looks like rhyolite and appears to show a form of banding.
