Baryte mineral specimens from Murton Mine, Scoredale Valley, Cumbria, These particular examples  have a bladed crystal habit and are predominantly brown/green in colour. Baryte ( Barite ) is a barium sulphate mineral. It can come in a range of colours from white & orange through to grey & brown.  It was extracted in UK  with few commercial exceptions, as a gangue mineral from lead and iron ore mining ( galena and hematite). Baryte is an unusually heavy mineral hence its old name ‘heavy spar’ derived from Greek. It is commonly used as a weighting agent in drilling muds to balance the hydrostaic column with down hole pore pressures whilst drilling.   The specimens are supplied  in a card tray with an information label.
