A Baryte mineral specimen from Force Crag Mine, Cumbria, now disused. The specimen is dense, as expected of this mineral and is an off white colour, it exhibits a bladed crystal habit. Barite is a barium sulphate mineral, sometimes spelt barite, it has been extracted in UK for centuries often associated as a by-product of lead and iron ore mining (mining of the minerals galena and hematite). An unusually weighty mineral hence its old name ‘heavy spar’ derived from Greek. It is commonly used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids and muds to balance the hydrostatic column when drilling through over pressured formations to prevent blow outs. The sample measures approximately 6 x 4.5 x 3 cm and weighs roughly 117 grams. The specimen comes supplied in a 3″ x 2″ white card tray with an information label.
