The bixbyite exhibits a black colour with metallic lustre, contrasting amazingly against the golden brown colour of the topaz crystals they are covering. The topaz crystals are around 1 – 3 cm in size and exhibit inclusions of small bixbyite crystals. The samples are small so will come supplied in a small polythene bag with an information label.

Specimens of topaz with bixbyite from Topaz mountain, Utah, USA. Bixbyite is a manganese iron oxide mineral which often has a black colouration, the colour is further enhanced by the minerals metallic lustre. A rare mineral, it is a must have for the more serious collector, it was named in honour of the American mineralogist Maynard Bixby, who lived between 1853–1935 and was responsible for its discovery in 1897. It is often found alongside other minerals, such as in these examples where it is found in clusters around beautiful, golden topaz crystals. The topaz crystals are around 1 – 3 cm in size and exhibit inclusions of small bixbyite crystals. The samples are small so will come supplied in a small polythene bag with an information label.
