Corundum is a crystalline form of Aluminium Oxide (Al2O3) containing traces of Iron, Vanadium, Titanium & Chromium. A common rock forming mineral. It is the second hardest naturally occurring mineral after Diamond & so is widely used as an abrasive. It's name is derived from the Tamil or Sanskrit -Kuruvindam, meaning ruby. Gem grade varieties include Rubies & Sapphires. The crystal system is Trigonal. However, these crystals are a man made product used as an abrasive. Individual pieces are 1 - 2cm in size. This mineral is sold by weight in 100g or in 1Kg bags.
