Cannel coal microscope thin section slide shows the organic content typical of this sedimentary rock sedimentary rock. Cannel coal by it’s physical morphology and low mineral content is considered to be a coal but by its texture & organic content considered an oil shale. It is derived from resins, spores, waxes, cutinaceous and corky materials of terrestrial vascular plants laid down in ponds, shallow lakes, swamps and bogs under oxygen-deficient conditions during the Carboniferous Era. Cannel coal is a type of low grade bituminous coal but it typically contains much less fixed carbon. This material was obtained from the Alexander open cast pit in Wigan, Lancashire. The slide is 46 x 27 mm in size, supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy, petrological & educational use.

Anthracite coal specimens, a vitreous, high grade coal with a hard and compact nature, these samples are from the Carboniferous coalfields of South Wales, UK and are one of the coals which have fewer impurities and a high carbon contents. Available in optional sizes, each sample will come supplied in a card tray with a label.
We also supply Anthracite Coal thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Specimens of Bituminous Coal, collected from the Carboniferous deposits in Yorkshire. Bituminous Coal is an organic sedimentary rock, that forms by diagenetic and sub metamorphic compression of peat bog & swamp material. Its primary constituents are macerals: vitrinite, and liptinite. The carbon content of bituminous coal is around 60-80%. The rest consists of residual water, air, hydrogen, and sulphur. These specimens are available in multiple sizes and come in a white card tray with an information label.
We also supply Bituminous Coal thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
Bituminous coal thin section slide. These thin sections exhibit more air pockets then their anthracite counterpart as to be expected being the less pure, more volatile rich variety. The slides are 30 microns thick and measure 46 x 27 mm in size.

Specimens of Lignite (Brown Coal), collected from Germany. Lignite is a soft, combustible sedimentary rock which forms by the natural compression of peat material. It has a high carbon content 25 – 35% & a moisture content up to 66%. The high volatile matter content makes it easier to convert into gas and liquid petroleum products than higher ranking coals. It is used almost exclusively for the generation of electricity in countries such as Greece & China. These pieces are Miocene in age. They are available in multiple sizes and come in a white card tray with an information label.
We also supply Lignite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Cannel coal by it’s physical morphology and low mineral content is considered to be coal but by its texture & organic matter content it is considered to be oil shale. Although historically the term cannel coal has been used interchangeably.
We also supply Cannel Coal thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

These thin sections exhibit beautiful crystals of olivine, pyroxene and augite, which often shows oscillatory zonation held within a matrix of plagioclase feldspar. The slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and are useful for interpreting the crystallisation history of the rock.

Bytownite basalt thin section slide exhibiting phenocryts of bytownite feldspar within a fine basaltic groundmass. These thin sections depict beautifully a textbook porphyritic texture. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size.

Gabbro thin section exhibiting some of the textbook features one would expect from this coarse, mafic igneous rock. These slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and are useful for interpreting the crystalisation history of the rock.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Shale microscope slide showing thin black lenses of organic matter (in XPL view) which fell from suspension in very low energy environments. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Cordierite Hornfels thin section microscope slide exhibiting a dark colour and a characteristic none crystalline form. Fine grains fit together like the fragments of a mosaic, this is often referred to as rough pavement or pavement structure. Larger crystals of cordierite can be seen scattered throughout the fine matrix.

Microgranite thin section slide exhibiting the medium grained nature of this intrusive igneous rock. The crystals in microgranite are smaller than those of normal granite indicating that it cooled at a quicker rate.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Purbeck Limestone thin section slide exhibiting densely pack shells of varying fauna. This rock is particularly interesting in thin section; numerous shells from varying organisms such as bivalves and gastropods along with numerous signs of mineral replacement and dissolution offers an opportunity to interpret the complex diagenetic history of the rock.

Syenite thin section slide. The thin sections show a dominant feldspar mass ( orthoclase ) with occurrences of hornblende, amphibole and clinopyroxene. Biotite mica may also be present however its occurrence is rare, The thin section is supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.
Click here to to explore our extensive collection of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic, and mineral thin sections. We offer a wide range of options to cater to your needs. If you require a microscope, you can find them available here as well.
