Cannel coal thin section microscope slide exhibiting the highly organic nature of this sedimentary rock. Cannel coal by it's physical morphology and low mineral content is considered to be coal but by its texture & organic matter content it is considered to be oil shale. It is derived from resins, spores, waxes, cutinaceous and corky materials of terrestrial vascular plants. This organic material accumulated in ponds and shallow lakes in peat-forming swamps and bogs of the Carboniferous age under oxygen-deficient conditions. Cannel coal is actually a type of bituminous coal but it typically contains much less fixed carbon. This material was obtained from the Alexander open cast pit in Wigan, Lancashire. The glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy, petrology & educational use.
