Rare Chimaeroid spine fragment collected from the Palaeocene Woolwich Bottom Beds in Herne Bay, Kent. Today chimaeroid fish reside largely in deep waters and their closest living relative are sharks although they are thought to have branched off from sharks 400 Mya. Chimaeroid fish are cartilaginous, this usually means that their remains are limited to the harder parts of the organism such as the tritors (teeth), jaw plates and fin spines. These fragmented spine specimens are vary rare and naturally they vary in appearance, they measure between 1 and 1.5 cm in length and are supplied in small plastic bags with an information label.
