Chromite mineral specimens exhibiting the dense weight expected of chrome rich minerals, chromite is an iron chromium oxide mineral which belongs to the Spinel group, a classification of minerals based on their unique crystalographic structure and lattices. Chromite can often be found as a lens inclusion in perodities or in other layered ultra mafic rocks. It is also known to be asociated with serpentine, indeed, it almost looks and feels like a black variation. Thjese particular specimens were collected by staff and come from the Feragen Chromium Mines district in Feragen, Røros, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway. The chromite mineralisation at these sites is almost exclusively confined to the dunitic members which can be traced for more than 300 m along strike. The 235 occurrences which were exploited in this area yielded 32,500 metric tons of ore, representing about 90% of the total Norwegian chromite ore production. Mostly the deposits are in shallow pits, which cover a large area of the hillside. They were exploited during the second World War and have been abandoned for many years. Specimens are available in a range of sizes, each supplied in a labelled card tray.

Collected by staff, olivine is a subsurface mineral which is unstable at the surface and weathers easily, making it rare. It may also contain the gemstone, peridot as well as kammererite. Dunite igneous rock specimens from the Gusdal olivine pit in Åheim, southern Norway. Composed of green olivine minerals with chromite and pyroxene crystals, the rock forms as intrusive igneous plutons in the earth mantle down to 400 km deep and displays a coarse texture and green colouration. Overall, the samples are fairly granular and weak due to their chemistry and form part of the basal gneiss complex of southern Norway. Ideal for various levels of collectors and for higher level education and research use, the samples are available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Chalcopyrite mineral specimens from Sulitjelma, Norway, a major copper ore mineral, these pieces exhibit excellent quality chalcopyrite detailing the shiny brassy yellow colouration and metallic lustre expected. These mineral specimens are approximately 70% – 80% chalcopyrite and are available in various sizes and come supplied in card tray with an information label.
These particular samples are a milky white to pale yellow colour and show typical fibrous crystal habit expected from Witherite. Samples are supplied in a white card with an information label.
Desert rose mineral specimens composed from gypsum found in Tunisia, the samples are composed of numerous crystals which resemble ‘petals’ which are randomly orientated, thus giving them a rose flower effect. Blue lace agate mineral specimens of moderate size which clearly exhibit alternating bands of blue and white, the specimens come from Botswana and are excellent grade with minimal matrix on them. Formed through volcanic processes and the deposition of silica compounds in igneous rocks, these minerals are both important educationally and calming to look at.

Iceland spar is a clear variation of calcite, it exhibits the rhombic crystal system of calcite perfectly, the crystals easily divide into rhombs, making them well sought after for a variety of reasons. Originally reported from Helgustadir Mine, Eskifjord, Iceland, hence its name. One of the most remarkable aspect of Iceland spar is its refractive properties. When light passes through one of the crystals, it is divided into two rays at different angles which results in a double refraction effect. Essentially, anything seen though the crystal is seen in double. This can best be seen if you place the calcite over some text, it will appear as if it has been printed twice. These mineral samples come from Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico and are available in 2 sizes: Upto 1″ and Over 1″. They come in a card tray with an information label.
Pyrite is a well known and common mineral found around the world, commonly known as fools gold, it has a brassy yellow colour and metallic lustre, most pyrite people will see will likely be pyrite crystal beds or chunks. These specimens are individual cubes of pyrite which demonstrate the signature cubic crystal structure. These samples are from Spain and are available in 2 sizes: 1 cm and 2 cm cubes and come supplied in a polythene bag with an information label.
