Crocoite is a toxic lead chromate mineral with a rich orange colour, these particular specimens come from the Adelaide mine, Dundas, Tasmania, Australia and exhibit the monoclinic crystal system the mineral tends to grow as. These specimens appear as randomly orientated, long crystals on a matrix and have an adamantine lustre. The mineral, which was discovered at the Berezovskoe Au Deposit (Berezovsk Mines) in Ekaterinburg in the Urals, Russia in 1766 is fairly soft,only being between 2 to 3 on the Moh’s scale of hardness. It was named by F. S. Beudant in 1832 and derived from the Greek word krokos, meaning saffron due to its colouration. Excellent high quality mineral sample from a famous location,
the specimens from Dundas, Tasmania are known to be among some of the best in world, we can offer these specimens in various sizes, all supplied in a grip seal bag with a label.
