Textbook desert sandstone microscope thin section ideal for educational use. These thin sections exhibit well rounded quartz clasts as you would expect from an aeolian transported sediment. The grains have iron oxide or hematite rims and quartz overgrowths act as the initial quartz cement holding the sediment together. This desert sandstone is from the Triassic. Approximately 200 Ma. It belongs to the group of rocks known as the New Red Sandstone which date from the Permian (280 Ma) into the Triassic. We collected this material from Lazonby, near Penrith, Cumbria. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.
