Fire opal is a gemstone and variety of opal which owes its name to its fiery orange colour. This material comes Querétaro in Mexico, the most famous fire opal source in the world. Opal is actually classed as a mineraloid because it lacks crystallity i.e. it is amorphous. Being amorphous, this mineral is smooth and naturally shiny, it has not been polished and it is completely natural. These specimens are supplied in a small ( 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm ) magnification box to enhance the viewing of the sample. It would make an interesting addition to any collection and is suitable for children over the age of seven.
