Carboniferous fish coprolites preserved within a shale matrix. These specimens were collected in Snabe Burn, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Coprolites are fossilised feces, they are classified as trace fossils because they only provide us with evidence of previous animal activity and existence. Although rarely can a producer of the coprolite be identified from the coprolite alone; they do still tell palaeontologists important information regarding the diet of the animal. Naturally these coprolites vary in size between 1 to 4 cm and they are supplied in a small plastic bag with an information label.
