A Gabbro Big Feldspar slide, revealing significantly larger feldspar crystals compared to ordinary gabbro. This rock shares a similar composition, forming in plutonic environments but with a slower cooling rate. It actively comprises pyroxenes (typically clinopyroxene), abundant plagioclase, and minor amounts of olivine and amphibole. This section displays twinning in the plagioclase and the vibrant colors of the pyroxene, creating an appealing thin section.
These Big Feldspar Gabbro samples originate from Carrock Fell, Cumbria, and actively complement hand specimens, aiding in the interpretation of the rock’s crystallization history. Skilled artisans precisely craft each section to a thickness of 30 microns, expertly mounted on a 46 x 27 mm glass slide with a cover slip. This Gabbro Big Feldspar slide comes supplied in a prtective sleeve with information label.

Anorthosite is a phaneritic, intrusive igneous rock characterized by a predominance of plagioclase feldspar (90–100%), and a minimal mafic component (0–10%) including Pyroxene, ilmenite, magnetite, and olivine. These thin sections exhibit a rock which has been deformed and as such the once large plagioclase crystals have recrystallized to form much smaller crystals.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Gabbro thin section exhibiting some of the textbook features one would expect from this coarse, mafic igneous rock. This material comes from Iceland. The glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy, petrology & educational use.

Gabbro igneous rock specimens from Balmedie quarry, Aberdeen, Scotland which exhibit a coars grained texture from the crystals. Formed as a mafic pluton intrusion, the samples contain pyroxenes such as augite along side plagioclase feldspar, amphibole and olivine crystals. They are derived from a body known as the Belhelvie basic intrusion which the parent unit being the Caledonian Supersuite. Samples exhibit a grey colouration and density and are suitable for the more serious or professional collector or higher educational use to differentiate similar looking igneous rocks with different compositions and origins. Available in three sizes, the specimens come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Gabbro thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

These thin sections exhibit beautiful crystals of olivine, pyroxene and augite, which often shows oscillatory zonation held within a matrix of plagioclase feldspar. The slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and are useful for interpreting the crystallisation history of the rock.

Millstone grit thin section slide exhibiting the coarse and siliceous nature of this British Carboniferous coarse sandstone. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Purbeck Limestone thin section slide exhibiting densely pack shells of varying fauna. This rock is particularly interesting in thin section; numerous shells from varying organisms such as bivalves and gastropods along with numerous signs of mineral replacement and dissolution offers an opportunity to interpret the complex diagenetic history of the rock.

Rhyolite thin section slide exhibiting the fine grained nature of this felsic igneous rock. The thin section shows a silica rich mineral assemblage of fine grained quartz and plagioclase. Accessory minerals present include biotite mica and hornblende. This material was collected from Cumbria, UK.

Microgranite thin section slide exhibiting the medium grained nature of this intrusive igneous rock. The crystals in microgranite are smaller than those of normal granite indicating that it cooled at a quicker rate.

Rhomb porphyry thin section exhibiting the textbook porphyritic texture of this rare igneous rock. The thin section shows a fine grained alkali feldspar groundmass with large phenocrysts of augite. This material was collected near Oslo in Norway.

Amygdaloidal basalt thin section slide exhibiting amygdaloids of varying sizes within a fine grained basaltic ground mass. This particular material was collected from the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Diorite thin section slide. Diorite is a grey to dark-grey intermediate intrusive igneous rock composed principally of plagioclase feldspar (typically andesine), biotite mica, hornblende, and/or pyroxene. This particular material was collected in Cumbria.

Travertine thin section slide. Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral rich springs, especially hot springs. It is formed by the rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate, often at the margins of a hot spring or in a limestone caves.

Welded tuff thin section slide exhibiting a jumbled mass of irregularly sized broken clasts held in situ by finer ash particles which have become welded together. This material was collected from Cumbria, the original rock is likely rhyolite, and indeed in hand specimen the tuff almost still looks like rhyolite and appears to show a form of banding.

Rare eclogite thin section slides cut from our Norwegian eclogite hand specimens. Eclogite is a rare rock, composed of mainly two minerals, reddish-brown garnets and Omphacite (green pyroxene), our thin sections exhibit this clearly.

Pumice thin section slide exhibiting the highly vesicular nature of this extrusive igneous rock. Pumice lavas tend to be silicic or felsic which are highly viscous thus do not allow the gas bubbles to escape efficiently. This material was collected from the Lipari islands of Italy.
