Specimens of gabbro containing tourmaline and pyrite from Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Gabbro is an igneous rock which exhibits a phaneratic coarse grained texture, with crystals being visible with the naked eye. It is an intrusive rock composed of mafic minerals such as pyroxenes, mainly augite, along with plagioclase feldspars and minor occurrences of amphibole and olivine, the latter of which can give the rock, which is a grey colour, a slightly green tint. Gabbro forms as intrusive igneous bodies such as plutons, deep beneath the earths surface as a holocrystalline rock when magnesium (plagioclase) rich and iron (augite) rich magma cools slowly, resulting in a coarse textured rock. These particular samples of gabbro contain small but visible amounts of tourmaline crystals and pyrite, some pieces may also show small amounts of epidote and actinolite. These specimens are available in multiple sizes and are supplied in a card tray with an information label.
