Gneiss is a metamorphic rock often formed from high grade regional metamorphism, usually from pre-existing rock (known as the country rock). As the metamorphic processes are high grade, the original rock could have either been sedimentary or igneous. One of the most identifiable features of gneiss are its alternating dark and light foliations, known as banding, which are known as gneissic banding and composed of various dark and light coloured minerals. The dark bands are often comprised of mafic minerals such as iron and pyroxenes where as the lighter coloured bands are felsic in chemical composition, often comprised of potassium, aluminium or silicate minerals. These particular gneiss rock samples are of the famous Lewisian gneiss from Scotland, they are believed to have been igneous in origin, determined due to the rock being much more darker than other gneisses we stock, such as the Norwegian variety. It forms part of the Lewisian complex, a collective of various Pre-Cambrian rocks, and among the oldest rocks in the United Kingdom. The gneiss, and much of the Lewisian rocks were at some point caught up in the Caledonian orogeny which occured between the Ordovician to Devonian periods approximately 490–390 million years ago, which pushed most of these Archaeic rocks upwards, as outcrops on the surface. They are available in various optional sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Large Pink Gneiss rock specimens collected from Evje, Norway. Specimens also contain some Biotite and show banding. Supplied in 1 kilogram polythene bags with a data label.
Biotite Gneiss rock specimens collected from Evje, Norway. Specimens will show banding. Specimens are supplied in a polythene bag in lots of 1 kg with a label.
Gneiss from Evje, Norway, containing more feldspar and quartz than Lewisian gneiss from Scotland, giving it a pink colour, these specimens show excellent banding and text book crystal structure, supplied in 3 sizes, ideal for educational use.
We also supply Gneiss thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Hornblende gneiss is a coarse grained metamorphic rock belonging to the gneiss family, its overall dark colouration is due to high levels of the mafic mineral hornblende, while quartz and feldspar are also present. The rock specimens come from southern Norway and are available in various optional sizes.
We also supply Hornblende Gneiss thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Banded rhyolite from Glen Coe, Scotland showing laminar flow banding which was produced by the viscous lava which formed the rock, available in various sizes, these specimens are suitable for educational use to display flow banding. Supplied in a card tray with an information label.

An igneous rock exhibiting a porphyritic texture containing large cubic crystals of feldspar within a fine grained matrix. Collected near Oslo, Norway. Each sample is supplied in a labelled card tray. Each sample is supplied in a labelled card tray.
We also supply Rhomb Porphyry thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Accretionary lapilli tuff is an igneous pyroclastic rock, these samples come from Longsleddle, Cumbria in the UK and forms when hot ash and debris is ejected from as volcano. Some of this material is held together by moisture and once heavy enough, falls into the ash below forming small ‘spots’ within the material, creating a speckled rock. The samples are suitable both for young and serious collectors as well as educational use and are supplied in various sizes with a card tray and label.

Larvikite is an igneous plutonic rock and variant of monzonite from Larvik, Norway, due to its chemistry, it is composed mainly of orthoclase, albite and anorthite along with plagioclase which gives the rock a blue to silver shimmering effect. The igneous pluton formed during the Permian period, 292 – 298 million years ago during the the Variscan orogeny. A beautiful rock to observe due to its coarse crystalline texture and schiller effect, the samples are ideal for general interest, collectors and educational use with specimens being available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Syenite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Olivine dolerite igneous rock specimens from Clee Hill, Shropshire, UK, composed of pyroxene minerals such as augite and magnetite as well as plagioclase feldspar. The samples are fine grained and crystalline in texture with a dense weight and black colouration. Similar in appearance to gabbro and basalt, the rock samples are suitable for serious collectors or higher level education to explain the difference in chemistry and mineralogy of igneous rocks. The samples are available in three sizes and supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Olivine Dolerite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Snowflake obsidian is quite striking in appearance. It is characterised by the inclusion of radially clustered crystals of cristobalite, which when viewed at a glance, appear like snowflakes on the surface of the rock. These crystal clusters are set in an otherwise black vitreous matrix of obsidian, which is an naturally occurring volcanic glass, even exhibiting a conchoidal fracture. Cristobalite is a high temperature polymorph of silica, it can form as a result of the devitrification of the obsidian. These specimens come from Java, Indonesia and are supplied in card trays, sizes which are optional, each tray also has a small data label supplied.
We also supply Snowflake Obsidian thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
Rhyolite Felsite, a highly felsitic composed variation of Rhyolite, found in Fife, Scotland, an extrusive igneous rock composed of sodium, quartz and feldspar, thus often having a pale white to pink colouration. Available in various sizes and supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Gabbro igneous rock specimens from Balmedie quarry, Aberdeen, Scotland which exhibit a coars grained texture from the crystals. Formed as a mafic pluton intrusion, the samples contain pyroxenes such as augite along side plagioclase feldspar, amphibole and olivine crystals. They are derived from a body known as the Belhelvie basic intrusion which the parent unit being the Caledonian Supersuite. Samples exhibit a grey colouration and density and are suitable for the more serious or professional collector or higher educational use to differentiate similar looking igneous rocks with different compositions and origins. Available in three sizes, the specimens come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Gabbro thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Specimens of Limestone, collected from Derbyshire. Limestone is a common, well known sedimentary rock. It consists of the calcium-rich shells, bones, and skeletons of the fauna that dominated during that period. It was laid down approximately 350 million years ago in semi tropical seas and comes from the Dinantian epoch of the Lower Carboniferous. This rock is very pure, about 98% soluble in rainwater (over time) leaving only residual clay. Its uses include aggregate, building stone, the manufacture of cement, paper & calcium carbide. Available in various sizes, each piece comes supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Limestone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Graphic granite is an igneous pegmatite rock from Iveland, Norway, which forms in intrusive batholithic bodies that have a felsic composition. As such, the rock is mainly composed of quartz and orthoclase feldspar crystals and lacks any mica, making the rock leucocratic. These samples have what is known as a graphic texture, due to the formation of the crystals, which result in an appearance similar to that of cuneiform text which was once used by ancient human cultures. A brightly coloured, eye catching rock, the samples are suitable for collectors and educational use at higher levels and come available in three sizes. Each specimens is supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Greisen metamorphic rock specimens from Caldbeck Fells, Cumbria, composed mainly of quartz and mica with an off yellow colouration. The rock is known as an endoskarn and forms when hydrothermal fluid and heat alter a granitic body, resulting a heavily altered rock which may contain trace amounts of rare elements. These samples are suitable for advanced collectors and higher level education and are available in three sizes, each pieces will come supplied in a card tray with a label.
We also supply Greisen thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
