Halite (also known as rock salt) is a sodium mineral specimen and variation of salt, it has a cubic crystal habit as well as a vitreous lustre. Colouration can vary, even within the same bed from a deep orange to an almost transparent colour and shades inbetween. Clay inclusions may also be present, appearing as small brown inclusions within the mineral or on the surface of samples. As a salt mineral, it does indeed have a salty taste, although doing this is not recommended, today, halites main industrial use is that of rock salt or road grit to aid in dissolving ice on roads during the winter time. These particular mineral specimens come from the Boulby mine in Redcar, North Yorkshire and are available in a range of sizes, each piece will come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
