Hematite is an iron bearing mineral and primary ore for iron. It is characterised by it’s deep red colouration which stains anything it comes into contact with easily and on some of the samples, a botryoidal form and a metallic lustre, usually observable when the surface is cleaned. The excellent botryoidal form has lead to this mineral sometimes being referred to as ‘kidney ore’ due to their resemblance to the organs. These particular mineral specimens from Oughoud, Morocco exhibit hematite, showing these examples excellently, especially on larger samples, some pieces may also have the mineral occurring over barytes, another dense mineral, both which are often associated with each other. Caution is advised when handling these samples due to the staining properties, it is actually hematite staining which give red sandstone its colour. These specimens are available in 3 sizes and will come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

The Lothian landscape took over 400 million years to reach its present shape. This book tells the story of its journey from erupting volcanoes, through rivers, seas and ice caps, to the peaceful parks, restored quarries and level playing fields we see today.
