Jasper is a quartz mineral which has a dense, microcrystalline structure and is completely opaque, often being a variation of red in colouration, although other colours are present too. It is a well known mineral, mostly because of its extensive use in various items of jewelry as it takes a very fine finish and high polish. While green, yellow and rarely blue can be found, it is commonly found in various shades of red, such as brick red, maroon and near orange, this colour is due to the presence of iron impurities. Just like quartz, the more high grade samples can show a conchoidal fracture and even produce very sharp edges which can easily cut. These particular samples come from South Africa and are available in various sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
