Specimens of Kuphus calamus pholad borings from Virginia, U.S.A, dated to the Miocene epoch. These trace fossils are pholad borings made by the bivalve species Kuphus calamus, many species of bivalve are known to have adapted to boring with their shells becoming highly modified for the task. The borings are tubular burrows made in substrates such as firm clay, limestone or peat, which become the permanent homes of the bivalves that created them. These samples measure approximately 1 – 2 cm in length, 5 mm in diameter and weighing roughly 1 gram. The specimens are supplied in a polythene bag with an information label and are ideal for fossil collectors.
