Labradorite Feldspar mineral specimens from Madagascar. These specimens have been cut and polished on one face. Labradorite Feldspar is an unusual mineral, and as a member of the plagioclase series it is commonly found in mafic igneous rocks. It is named after the place in which it was first identified (Labrador, Canada) and can display a beautiful iridescent effect – known as a Schiller effect or Labradorescence. The colours displayed in this effect can include blues, greens, yellows, oranges and reds. Labradorescence is caused when light enters the stone and strikes an internal fracture, which reflects the light and disperses it into an array of different colours. Being a feldspar mineral, Labradorite is fairly hard at 6 – 6.5 on the Moh’s scale of hardness, with a vitreous to pearly lustre. These specimens are available in a 2″ x 2″ size, each specimen will come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
