Larvikite is an igneous plutonic rock and variant of monzonite from Larvik, Norway, due to its chemistry, it is composed mainly of orthoclase, albite and anorthite along with plagioclase which gives the rock a blue to silver shimmering effect. The igneous pluton formed during the Permian period, 292 – 298 million years ago during the the Variscan orogeny. A beautiful rock to observe due to its coarse crystalline texture and schiller effect, the samples are ideal for general interest, collectors and educational use with specimens being available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Larvikite is an igneous plutonic rock and a variation of monzonite as it is composed mainly of feldspar minerals, specifically the three endmember ones, orthoclase, albite and anorthite, with sizes of crystals being over 2 cm in size giving the rock a coarse grained texture. Plagioclase is also present in the rock in some quantity and it is the alternating layers between the orthoclase and plagioclase which gives the rock a blue/silver shimmering effect, best visible when a face has been cut and polished, which is known as a schiller effect, (or labradorescence). These particular specimens were collected by staff and come from Larvik in Norway and form part of the Larvik Plutonic Complex in the area. This complex is a suit of 10 igneous plutons which were emplaced in the Oslo graben, a large rift event which occurred between the end of the Carboniferous and the start of the Permian period known as the Variscan orogeny. This orogeny was caused when huge continental collision took place between Euramerica (Laurussia) and Gondwana to form the super continent, Pangaea. The rock has been dated to the Permian period, between 292 – 298 million years old and was found from its type locality of Larvik. Due to its naturally eye catching appearance, striking blue schiller and hard wearing properties, this rock is extremely sought after for numerous uses such as building facing stones, counter tops, gravestones and many more. The samples are ideal for all manner of collectors both due to its rarity in the world and notable appearance as well as for educational use at various levels as it will surely garner interest from younger pupils due to its colours as well as its mineralogy and texture being suitable to teach higher level students. Specimens are available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Syenite thin section slide. The thin sections show a dominant feldspar mass ( orthoclase ) with occurrences of hornblende, amphibole and clinopyroxene. Biotite mica may also be present however its occurrence is rare, The thin section is supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Adamellite granite also known as shap granite from Cumbria, famous for its large pink feldspar crystals his granite is well known. The samples come from the Shap Quarry, Shap Fell, Cumbria and are supplied in a polythene bag in lots of 1 kg with a label.
Olivine dolerite igneous rock specimens from Clee Hill, Shropshire, UK, composed of pyroxene minerals such as augite and magnetite as well as plagioclase feldspar. The samples are fine grained and crystalline in texture with a dense weight and black colouration. Similar in appearance to gabbro and basalt, the rock samples are suitable for serious collectors or higher level education to explain the difference in chemistry and mineralogy of igneous rocks. The samples are available in three sizes and supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Olivine Dolerite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Accretionary lapilli tuff is an igneous pyroclastic rock, these samples come from Longsleddle, Cumbria in the UK and forms when hot ash and debris is ejected from as volcano. Some of this material is held together by moisture and once heavy enough, falls into the ash below forming small ‘spots’ within the material, creating a speckled rock. The samples are suitable both for young and serious collectors as well as educational use and are supplied in various sizes with a card tray and label.

Specimens of Puddingstone, collected from Hertfordshire, UK. Puddingstone is a variation of conglomerate, which is term used to describe a coarse grained sedimentary rock, featuring large, well rounded clasts in a finer grained matrix. It dates back to the Paleocene to Eocene period around 56 millions years ago. This particular rock is composed almost entirely of silica and has no porosity, likely contributing to its notorious hardness. This rare rock is only found in quantity at one locality in Hertfordshire. As such, it is becoming exceedingly difficult to obtain. This rock is available in multiple sizes and each piece comes supplied in a white card tray with information label.
Biotite granite from Spain exhibiting plagioclase feldspar, quartz and biotite mica, specimens have been cut and polished on one surface allowing easy viewing of the crystals without the aid of magnification.

Amygdaloidal basalt is an igneous rock which is extrusive in nature, these specimens formed over 60 million years ago during the Tertiary period and come from Ireland. They are part of the Antrim lava group and exhibit a dark colouration with occurrences of amygdales containing quartz and calcite crystals. As a basalt they are somewhat dense, but lighter than pure samples due to the cavities within them which formed as a result of gaseous activity during their ejection. Over time, hydrothermal fluids pass through the rock and minerals form within the cavities, which gives the usually dark coloured rock a speckled appearance. These samples are available in various sizes and are suitable for higher educational use to detail the subtle differences between similar igneous rocks, they come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Obsidian is an extrusive igneous rock, these specimens exhibit a typical black colouration with conchoidal fractures, they come from South East Mexico and are excellent for educational use and collectors due to the quality. This igneous rock forms when magma extrudes onto the earths surface, chemically it is silica rich and impurities give the black colouration. It’s fine crystalline texture and fracture makes obsidian appear glassy and it breaks as such. The pieces are available in various sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Obsidian thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
Metagabbro specimens from Lom, Central Norway. Also known as scapolite-hornblende due to the absence of feldspar in the rock are available in 3 optional sizes and come supplied in a card tray with a data label.
