The high volatile component of lignite is clearly reflected in the thin section view, particularly when compared with those of higher grade coals.

Lignite thin section slide. Lignite coal and indeed all other varieties of coal are classed as organic sedimentary rocks. It has a high carbon content 25 – 35% & a moisture content up to 66%. The high volatile content makes it easier to convert into gas and liquid petroleum products than higher ranking coals. Often referred to as ‘brown coal’, it forms due to the compression of peat material. Having been under minimal compression in comparison to the higher grade coals i.e. bituminous and antracite, coarser material and plant matter is often preserved in lignite rock, this is reflected in the thin section. The slides are 30 microns thick and measure 46 x 27 mm in size and have a cover slip of the section along with a protective cardboard sleeve.

It has a high carbon content 25 – 35% & a moisture content up to 66%. The high volatile matter content makes it easier to convert into gas and liquid petroleum products than higher ranking coals. It is used almost exclusively for the generation of electricity in countries such as Greece & China. These pieces are Miocene in age. They are available in multiple sizes and come in a white card tray with an information label.

Specimens of Bituminous Coal, collected from the Carboniferous deposits in Yorkshire. Bituminous Coal is an organic sedimentary rock, that forms by diagenetic and sub metamorphic compression of peat bog & swamp material. Its primary constituents are macerals: vitrinite, and liptinite. The carbon content of bituminous coal is around 60-80%. The rest consists of residual water, air, hydrogen, and sulphur. These specimens are available in multiple sizes and come in a white card tray with an information label.

Purbeck Limestone thin section slide exhibiting densely pack shells of varying fauna. This rock is particularly interesting in thin section; numerous shells from varying organisms such as bivalves and gastropods along with numerous signs of mineral replacement and dissolution offers an opportunity to interpret the complex diagenetic history of the rock.

Cordierite Hornfels thin section microscope slide exhibiting a dark colour and a characteristic none crystalline form. Fine grains fit together like the fragments of a mosaic, this is often referred to as rough pavement or pavement structure. Larger crystals of cordierite can be seen scattered throughout the fine matrix.

Welded tuff thin section slide exhibiting a jumbled mass of irregularly sized broken clasts held in situ by finer ash particles which have become welded together. This material was collected from Cumbria, the original rock is likely rhyolite, and indeed in hand specimen the tuff almost still looks like rhyolite and appears to show a form of banding.
