Mahogany obsidian tumblesotnes, ideal gemstones for a gift or for your self. They are made from tumbled and polished obsidian, which is actually an igneous volcanic rock as opposed to a mineral that many people think. Obsidian forms when molten magma or lava is cooled quickly, usually when it comes into contact with a cold substance such as water or ice. Rapid cooling causes the crystals to form small and like glass. As such, when rough obsidian is broken, it even shatters like glass and also has sharp edges. For this reason, the stone was used by many ancient cultures as tools such as arrows, axes, knives etc. Mahogany obsidian (sometimes known as oak obsidian) gets its name from the brick red or brown coloured spots within it, this is due to iron impurities in the rock at the time of formation. The pieces have been tumbled and polished making them smooth and safe to touch and enhances their colour. Available as a single gemstone or in sets.
