Marble is a hard crystalline metamorphic rock, often white in colour, though not always and is found around the world and used in a variety of ways. It shows no foliation at all and is usually composed of carbonate minerals such as calcite or dolomite and as such, marble is often the metamorphosed result of limestone. (Although it should also be noted, that within the stone mason and building industry, the term marble may refer to a wide range of different rocks for the sake of simplicity). The rock exhibits a white colour and medium interlocking crystals, which suggests a limestone rock origin. These particular specimens are from Torrin Quarry on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Perhaps the most well know use of marble is within the art industry and indeed many of us have most likely seen a number of marble statues or carvings in our lives. It is also heavily used in the construction sector as a building stone or decorative stone.

We also supply Marble thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
