Old red sandstone microscope slide exhibiting the well sorted nature of this ancient sedimentary rock. The grains are very fine but iron oxide rims can be distinguished around quartz clasts in PPL view. The Old Red Sandstone describes a suite of sedimentary rocks deposited in a variety of environments during the Devonian but extending back into the late Silurian and on into the earliest part of the Carboniferous. It is dominated by alluvial sediments with conglomerates at its base, and progresses to a combination of aeolian, lakes and river sediments. The familiar red colour of the rocks is from the presence of Iron Oxide. These slides are made from our own stock of Lower Devonian Old Red Sandstone which was collected from Gloucestershire. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Specimens of Aeolian Sandstone collected from Lazonby, near Penrith, Cumbria in the UK. This aeolian sandstone is Triassic in age – approximately 200 Ma. It belongs to the group of rocks known as the New Red Sandstone which date from the Permian (280 Ma) into the Triassic. The composition of this sandstone consists solely of spheroidal (millet seed) quartz grains with an iron oxide cement called haematite. It is the presence of this haematite that contributes to the distinct red – orange colouration of these samples. This lithology is typical of an aeolian (wind blown) hot desert environment. Available in multiple sizes, these specimens come supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Aeolian Sandstone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
Specimens of Old Red Sandstone, collected from Gloucestershire in the UK. The familiar red colour of the rocks from the presence of Iron Oxide. These specimens are Lower Devonian in age, fine grained and pinkish red in colour. Purbeck Limestone thin section slide exhibiting densely pack shells of varying fauna. This rock is particularly interesting in thin section; numerous shells from varying organisms such as bivalves and gastropods along with numerous signs of mineral replacement and dissolution offers an opportunity to interpret the complex diagenetic history of the rock.

Lignite thin section slide. Lignite coal and indeed all other varieties of coal are classed as organic sedimentary rocks. It has a high carbon content 25 – 35% & a moisture content up to 66%. The high volatile component of lignite is clearly reflected in the thin section view, particularly when compared with those of higher grade coals.
