Olivine mineral specimens are highly sought after due to their rarity and vibrant, striking green colouration. Olivine is a mineral which often forms in the subsurface of the earths crust, for this reason, it is often unstable on the earths surface and thus weathers easily. The depth at which it forms also results in samples being quite dense for their size. It derives its name from it’s green colour which is a result of nickle and is found in mafic and ultra mafic igneous environments. When high quality crystals are found, they are known as peridot and are highly sought after as gemstones, as they can be cut, shaped and polished with drastic effects, enhancing the green colour further more. It has also been found on the surface of the moon, rocks collected from the Apollo 15 mission brought back samples of olivine basalt. Specimens may occasionally exhibit small amounts or peridot or a rare mineral, kammererite, however overall, samples supplied are granular or crystalline in texture and exhibit the typical bright olive green colour. Available in various sizes and supplied in card trays with an information label.

Essexite igneous rock specimens from Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK, also known as olivine or nepheline monzogabbro is an intrusive rock with mafic chemistry, composed of nepheline and plagioclase feldspar along with olivine, magnetite minerals as well as augite phenocrysts which exhibit euhedral crystal forms. The rock has a dense weight and overall dark colouration but attractive appearance. It is locally known as Crawfordjohns and was highly sought after as a high quality material to produce curling stones. Garnet peridotite igneous rock specimens found in the Gusdal Olivine Pit, Åheim, Norway is an ultra mafic rock which contains high pressure and temperature minerals such as olivine and garnet crystals. Exhibiting a green colouraiton with striking red spots, these samples were pushed up to the earths crust during the Caledonian orogeny during the Ordovician and Devonian period over 400 million years ago. The specimens are dense as expected and are ideal for children and serious collectors because of the colourful appearance as well as for higher educational use to describe deep mantle material as well as orogenic processes. Composed of green olivine minerals with chromite and pyroxene crystals, the rock forms as intrusive igneous plutons in the earth mantle down to 400 km deep and displays a coarse texture and green colouration. Overall, the samples are fairly granular and weak due to their chemistry and form part of the basal gneiss complex of southern Norway. Calcite (Optical) – Iceland Spar £1.50 – £2.50 ex VAT

Iceland spar is a clear variation of calcite, it exhibits the rhombic crystal system of calcite perfectly, the crystals easily divide into rhombs, making them well sought after for a variety of reasons. Originally reported from Helgustadir Mine, Eskifjord, Iceland, hence its name. One of the most remarkable aspect of Iceland spar is its refractive properties. When light passes through one of the crystals, it is divided into two rays at different angles which results in a double refraction effect. Essentially, anything seen though the crystal is seen in double. This can best be seen if you place the calcite over some text, it will appear as if it has been printed twice. These mineral samples come from Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico and are available in 2 sizes: Upto 1″ and Over 1″. They come in a card tray with an information label.

Cleavelandite £2.25 – £6.00 ex VAT

Cleavelandite is a variety of the mineral albite, one of the constituent minerals of plagioclase feldspar, thus is found in areas where pegmatites and granites exists in certain localities around the world. These particular specimens come from Evje, in Southern Norway and as expected, has a pale green colouration to it. As with albite, cleavelandite also exhibits a triclinic crystal habit and has a hardness of 6- 7 on the Moh’s scale of hardness, it is usually found within cavities of other rocks or minerals. It as named in 1823 by Henry J. Brooke in honor of Parker Cleaveland , professor of geology and mineralogy at Bowdoin College in Maine. Our mineral specimens are massive in form with occasional accessory such as smokey quartz or plagioclase or orthoclase feldspar. The specimens were collected by our own staff from Evje and are available in a range of sizes. Each specimen is supplied in a labelled card tray.
