Microscope slides of orthoclase feldspar from Norway, these slides display the crystal structure of the mineral on a microscopic level which assists in the identification of this mineral in other slides. Orthoclase feldspar is a well known mineral and a common constituent found in many igneous rocks. It has two cleavage planes, which are at right angles to one another, resulting in the crystals breaking into rhombic forms and is the reason for its naming, being derived form the ancient Greek wording for “straight fracture.” It is often pink in colour but can be white or pale grey. It is fairly hard at 6 – 6.5 on the Moh’s scale of hardness and has a vitreous lustre, which means it shines or reflects light. Orthoclase is commonly found in many granitic rocks, being one of the main constituent minerals, the other two being quartz and mica. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy & educational use.

Specimens of white coloured Plagioclase Feldspar also known as a Albite-Anorthite Series mineral. The specimens come from Osedalen, Southern Norway and are supplied in a 2″x2″ 3″x2″ 4″x3″ card tray with an information label.
Orthocalse feldspar mineral specimens from Evje, Norway. It exhibits a pale pink, white or pale grey colouration with excellent cleavage planes with rhombic crystal forms, a common mineral found in granites and rhyolites, orthoclase belongs to the feldspar family of minerals and can be found all over the world. Specimens are available in various sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
Excellent specimens of Orthoclase Feldspar from Brazil which show clear crystal forms. Specimens are whitish in colour and are supplied in a white card tray with an information label.

Syenite thin section slide. The thin sections show a dominant feldspar mass ( orthoclase ) with occurrences of hornblende, amphibole and clinopyroxene. Biotite mica may also be present however its occurrence is rare, The thin section is supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Oolitic limestone thin section slide exhibiting textbook ooid grains, some with a clear nucleus and concentric calcareous layers. These microscope slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and allow for a more detailed view of the ooid grains and an opportunity to intepret the diagenetic history of the rock.

Obsidian, also known as ‘volcanic glass’ is a felsic, extrusive igneous rock. Crystal growth is minimal / absent within obsidian due to rapid solidification rates which inhibit crystal growth thus giving the rock a glassy appearance.

Diorite thin section slide. Diorite is a grey to dark-grey intermediate intrusive igneous rock composed principally of plagioclase feldspar (typically andesine), biotite mica, hornblende, and/or pyroxene. This particular material was collected in Cumbria.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Metaquartzite thin section slide exhibiting a fine, interlocking mosaic of quartz crystals characteristic of this metamorphic rock. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes. This material was collected near Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales.

These thin sections exhibit beautiful crystals of olivine, pyroxene and augite, which often shows oscillatory zonation held within a matrix of plagioclase feldspar. The slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and are useful for interpreting the crystallisation history of the rock.
