Specimens of Osteolepis remains from from Orkney, Scotland. These samples were found in old red sandstone, sandwick fish beds dating them to the Devonian period. Osteolepis is an extinct genus of lobe-finned fish that lived during the Devonian period. Osteolepis’ body was covered in heavy rhomboid scales, the scales on the fish’s head were covered in a thin layer of cosmine a somewhat spongy bony material containing canals to sensory organs. This is believed to have allowed the fish to sense changes in water pressure. These specimens are perfect for educational use but would also make a great addition to any British fossil collection. Samples are supplied in a white card tray with an information label.
