The carboniferous period, or more specifically the late carboniferous or Pennsylvanian stage is named for the vast quantity of plant matter that was fossilised as coal, and the latter Americanised lexeme references the particular coal deposits of Pennsylvania that these remains were once a part of. The fossils are within a laminated mudstone, which exhibits a dark grey colouration with a natural shine and smoothness, as to add to the aesthetic of the fossils.
