The fifteen fossils in this set illustrate some of the major ways in which an organism may become preserved i.e the method of fossilisation. Geologists and palaeontologists must be educated on the varying types of preservation method in order to truly understand the history of the rock in which the fossil is preserved. Examples include specimens illustrating carbonisation of organic parts. Petrification by impregnation of calcareous shells by calcite, silica replacing wood, compounds of iron replacing shells include Hematite (both oxides), Siderite (Carbonate), Pyrites (Sulphides). The set includes an insect in Amber and an example of nacreous replacement of an ammonite segment. An oolitic mould is also included. This collection would be suitable for geology students at college or university or just those who have an interest in paleontology.
