Pumice thin section slide exhibiting the highly vesicular nature of this extrusive igneous rock. Pumice forms when super heated, highly pressurised lava is violently ejected from a volcano. The porous nature of pumice occurs because of simultaneous rapid cooling and rapid depressurization. The depressurization creates bubbles by lowering the solubility of gases (including water and CO2) that are dissolved in the lava, causing the gases to rapidly exsolve. The simultaneous cooling and depressurization freezes the bubbles in the matrix. Pumice lavas tend to be silicic or felsic which are highly viscous thus do not allow the gas bubbles to escape efficiently. This material was collected from the Lipari islands of Italy. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Volcanic scoria rock specimens from Italy with a deep red colouration and numerous vesicle displaying text book quality. Formed when basaltic or andesitic magma or lava reaches the earth surface, the escaping gases leave behind pockets which remain even after the lava has solidified. Samples are available in optional sizes and come in a card tray with a label.
We also supply Volcanic Scoria thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Pumice specimens from the Lipari islands, Italy. Pumice is an igneous rock with a highly porous structure resulting from trapped gas bubbles as the lava was being ejected. The rock is usually very light & buoyant in water. Specimens are supplied in a card tray with label.
We also supply Pumice thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Volcanic scoria thin section slide exhibiting the highly vesicular nature of this extrusive volcanic rock. Typically volcanic scoria is basaltic or andesitic in composition; these magmas are typically runnier which results in a denser rock with larger vesicles.

Volcanic tuff thin section exhibiting welded angular clasts of varying size. A degree of orientation can be identified as a result of the fallout of volcanic ejecta. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip.

Welded tuff thin section slide exhibiting a jumbled mass of irregularly sized broken clasts held in situ by finer ash particles which have become welded together. This material was collected from Cumbria, the original rock is likely rhyolite, and indeed in hand specimen the tuff almost still looks like rhyolite and appears to show a form of banding.

A thin section of A’a Lava produced from the famous Laki Eruptions of 1783 – 1785 in Iceland. The thin section exhibits the highly vesicular nature of this extrusive volcanic rock. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip

Syenite thin section slide. The thin sections show a dominant feldspar mass ( orthoclase ) with occurrences of hornblende, amphibole and clinopyroxene. Biotite mica may also be present however its occurrence is rare, The thin section is supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

A thin section of mylonite which was collected from the metamorphic region of Lom, Central Norway. Mylonite is a fine-grained, compact rock produced by dynamic recrystallisation of the constituent minerals resulting in a reduction of the grain size of the rock.

Old red sandstone microscope slide exhibiting the well sorted nature of this particular sediment. Excellent to observe the nature of the minerals and interpret the history of the rock. The glass slide is 46 x 27 mm in size, suitable for enthusiasts, educational use and more, it will come in card sleeve with a label.

Bytownite basalt thin section slide exhibiting phenocryts of bytownite feldspar within a fine basaltic groundmass. These thin sections depict beautifully a textbook porphyritic texture. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size.

Microgranite thin section slide exhibiting the medium grained nature of this intrusive igneous rock. The crystals in microgranite are smaller than those of normal granite indicating that it cooled at a quicker rate.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Big feldspar gabbro thin section exhibiting exactly what its name describes, feldspar crystals much larger than those present in the ordinary gabbro which we supply. Characteristic twinning in the plagioclase and the bright colours of the pyroxene make for an attractive thin section, perfect for educational use.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Norwegian gneiss thin section slide exhibiting a dominant felsic composition i.e. quartz and plagioclase with less prominent mafic bands. We collected this material from Evje, Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.
