Pumice forms when super heated, highly pressurised lava is violently ejected from a volcano. The porous nature of pumice occurs because of simultaneous rapid cooling and rapid depressurization. The depressurization creates bubbles by lowering the solubility of gases (including water and CO2) that are dissolved in the lava, causing the gases to rapidly exsolve. The simultaneous cooling and depressurization freezes the bubbles in the matrix. Submarine eruptions can produce vast quantities of rapidly cooled pumice which floats to the surface creating shipping hazards.

It consists of the calcium-rich shells, bones, and skeletons of the fauna that dominated during that period. Gabbro igneous rock specimens from Balmedie quarry, Aberdeen, Scotland which exhibit a coars grained texture from the crystals. Formed as a mafic pluton intrusion, the samples contain pyroxenes such as augite along side plagioclase feldspar, amphibole and olivine crystals. They are derived from a body known as the Belhelvie basic intrusion which the parent unit being the Caledonian Supersuite. Samples exhibit a grey colouration and density and are suitable for the more serious or professional collector or higher educational use to differentiate similar looking igneous rocks with different compositions and origins. Breccia is a term used to describe a coarse grained sedimentary rock, with large angular clasts, surrounded by a finer grained matrix. The clasts in these specimens are cemented with calcrete which is formed on calcareous materials as a result of climatic fluctuations in arid and semi arid regions. These specimens are fault breccia meaning that unlike other breccia they were formed by tectonic forces making it a tectonite. Snowflake Obsidian
Obsidian (Snowflake) £2.50 – £8.00 ex VAT

Snowflake obsidian is quite striking in appearance. It is characterised by the inclusion of radially clustered crystals of cristobalite, which when viewed at a glance, appear like snowflakes on the surface of the rock. These crystal clusters are set in an otherwise black vitreous matrix of obsidian, which is an naturally occurring volcanic glass, even exhibiting a conchoidal fracture. Cristobalite is a high temperature polymorph of silica, it can form as a result of the devitrification of the obsidian. These specimens come from Java, Indonesia and are supplied in card trays, sizes which are optional, each tray also has a small data label supplied.
