Specimens of pyrite with peacock ore from Sulitjelma, Norway. Pyrite is a well known and common mineral found all over the world, it is commonly known as fools gold, a name possibly derived from the fact that many gold prospectors would mistake it for gold due to it’s metallic lustre and brassy colour. It is an iron mineral and fairly dense and is so named from the Greek word ‘pyritēs’ which means ‘in fire’ or ‘to fire’ which is a reference to the fact that it was historically noted for created sparks when struck by metal. It is often found in quartz veins or other rocks and is a common mineral and likely one that most people will come across in their childhood at some point. These samples of pyrite are encrusted with peacock ore and small amounts of chalcopyrite, this gives the pieces a beautiful aesthetic as the brassy colour of the pyrite contrasts with the purple, blue and pink of the peacock ore. These specimens are supplied in a white card tray with an information label and are perfect for any mineral collection.
