Microscope slides of Quartz from Madagascar, these slides display the crystal structure of the mineral on a microscopic level which assists in the identification of this mineral in other slides. Quartz is the most common mineral found at the surface of the earth and rock crystal is one of the most common, colourless, it is fairly hard and on some of the larger surfaces may show a conchoidal fracture. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy & educational use.

Rutilated quartz is a variation of quartz which contains thin fibrous rutile crystals within it, often randomly orientated. Rutiles are a titanium mineral, dense and black, it is a common accessory mineral in high-temperature and high-pressure metamorphic rocks and in igneous rocks but found in very few locations around the world. These mineral specimens are of a dull, sometimes yellow coloured quartz which contain the rutile crystals.Where as most minerals devalue when they contain impurities or inclusions, rutilated quartz is in fact often prized for this very reason. These samples are available various sizes and will come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
Rose quartz is a well know variation of quartz, easily identifiable due to its rose pink colouration, these fine crystalline mineral specimens are ideal as gifts, collectors, enthusiast and for use in education. These samples come from Namibia, Africa and the colour is due to iron impurities during the time that the quartz was forming, which tends to be a hydrothermal mineral and forms in veins. These specimens are very crystalline and may have sharp edges, care is advise when handling. They can be supplied in a range of sizes and supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Rock crystal mineral specimens from Madagascar, part of the quartz family of minerals, rock crystal is the clear or transparent variation of quartz, the most common mineral at the earths surface. These samples may show a conchoidal fracture and are suitable for collectors, enthusiast or educational use. Supplied in a card tray with an information label.
Smokey quartz mineral specimens collected from Iveland, Norway, these highly crystalline samples are a dark grey colour and may have sharp edges, caution is advised. The colour is due to natural irradiation during the formation process, samples are available in various sizes and come supplied in a card tray with a data label.
Milky quartz mineral specimens from Norway, with a pale white colouration, hence the name, sometimes also known as white quartz, snow quartz or simply quartz. These particular samples were collected by staff from Iveland, Norway. This locality is also where we collected the smokey quartz from. It is in a massive form and has a very fine crystalline texture, this also results in it sometimes being sharp, so caution is advised when handling these samples. It is available in various sizes and supplied in a card tray with an information label.
Microscope slides of tourmaline from Brazil, these slides display the crystal structure of the mineral on a microscopic level which assists in the identification of this mineral in other slides. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy & educational use.

Obsidian, also known as ‘volcanic glass’ is a felsic, extrusive igneous rock. Crystal growth is minimal / absent within obsidian due to rapid solidification rates which inhibit crystal growth thus giving the rock a glassy appearance.

Garnet Mica Schist thin section exhibiting textbook strain fabric and alignment of platy minerals within this popular metamorphic rock. This schist is from the Dalradian series, a complicated group of various metamorphic rocks which are dated to the Pre-Cambrian period and is present in both Scotland and Ireland.

Welded tuff thin section slide exhibiting a jumbled mass of irregularly sized broken clasts held in situ by finer ash particles which have become welded together. This material was collected from Cumbria, the original rock is likely rhyolite, and indeed in hand specimen the tuff almost still looks like rhyolite and appears to show a form of banding.

Hornblende Gneiss thin section slide exhibiting an abundance of the mafic mineral hornblende, accompanied by less abundant biotite mica, quartz and feldspar. This material was collected by staff from Southern Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Bytownite basalt thin section slide exhibiting phenocryts of bytownite feldspar within a fine basaltic groundmass. These thin sections depict beautifully a textbook porphyritic texture. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size.

Big feldspar gabbro thin section exhibiting exactly what its name describes, feldspar crystals much larger than those present in the ordinary gabbro which we supply. Characteristic twinning in the plagioclase and the bright colours of the pyroxene make for an attractive thin section, perfect for educational use.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Pumice thin section slide exhibiting the highly vesicular nature of this extrusive igneous rock. Pumice lavas tend to be silicic or felsic which are highly viscous thus do not allow the gas bubbles to escape efficiently. This material was collected from the Lipari islands of Italy.

Metaquartzite thin section slide exhibiting a fine, interlocking mosaic of quartz crystals characteristic of this metamorphic rock. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes. This material was collected near Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales.

Torridonian sandstone thin section slide exhibiting a fine grained arenaceous nature. The Torridonian Sandstones date from the Pre-Cambrian & are amongst the oldest rocks to be found in the UK. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip.

Diorite thin section slide. Diorite is a grey to dark-grey intermediate intrusive igneous rock composed principally of plagioclase feldspar (typically andesine), biotite mica, hornblende, and/or pyroxene. This particular material was collected in Cumbria.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Shale microscope slide showing thin black lenses of organic matter (in XPL view) which fell from suspension in very low energy environments. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Granite adamellite thin section slide exhibiting crystals of quartz, biotite and feldspar. We collected this material from the famous Shap Fell quarry, in Cumbria hence the rocks alternative name ‘ Shap Granite ‘.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.
