Shale microscope thin section showing thin black lenses of organic matter ( in XPL view ) which fell from suspension in very low energy environments. Some sections show a lenticular shale fabric and offer an unexpected insight into just how heterogeneous these particularly fine grained sediments can be. Naturally we cannot guarantee what each slide will show but we can guarantee that the slides are made from organic shale which we collected from the deep marine, Jurassic sediments of the Yorkshire coast. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Specimens of Shale, collected from Yorkshire. Shale is a fine grained, clastic sedimentary rock composed of mud. This mud is a mixture of clay mineral flakes and tiny fragments of other minerals, especially quartz and calcite. Shale is characterised by thin laminae, parallel layering or bedding, less than one centimetre in thickness. This makes the rock very fissile. Shales are associated with quiet water deposition, such as in lakes, lagoons or deltas. For these specimens in particular, the depositional environment was deep water marine from the Jurassic formations of the Yorkshire coast. These specimens are available in multiple sizes and come supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Shale thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Slate microscope thin section slide exhibiting a slight slaty fabric formed by the growth of mica. This material was collected from North Wales and dates back to the Cambrian period. The glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy, petrography & educational use.

Siltstone microscope slide exhibiting the fine to very fine grained nature of this sedimentary rock. The slides often show concentrated bands of mica which punctuate the dominant quartz mass. Excellent to observe the nature of the minerals and distinguish the history of the rock. The glass slide is 46 x 27 mm in size, suitable for enthusiasts, educational use and more, it will come in card sleeve with a label.

Garnet Mica Schist thin section exhibiting textbook strain fabric and alignment of platy minerals within this popular metamorphic rock. This schist is from the Dalradian series, a complicated group of various metamorphic rocks which are dated to the Pre-Cambrian period and is present in both Scotland and Ireland.

Pumice thin section slide exhibiting the highly vesicular nature of this extrusive igneous rock. Pumice lavas tend to be silicic or felsic which are highly viscous thus do not allow the gas bubbles to escape efficiently. This material was collected from the Lipari islands of Italy.

Granite adamellite thin section slide exhibiting crystals of quartz, biotite and feldspar. We collected this material from the famous Shap Fell quarry, in Cumbria hence the rocks alternative name ‘ Shap Granite ‘.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

These thin sections exhibit beautiful crystals of olivine, pyroxene and augite, which often shows oscillatory zonation held within a matrix of plagioclase feldspar. The slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and are useful for interpreting the crystallisation history of the rock.

Rhyolite thin section slide exhibiting the fine grained nature of this felsic igneous rock. The thin section shows a silica rich mineral assemblage of fine grained quartz and plagioclase. Accessory minerals present include biotite mica and hornblende. This material was collected from Cumbria, UK.

Tufa thin section slide. Tufa is a variety of limestone, formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals from ambient temperature water bodies. This particular material is from the Flandrian epoch of the Quaternary Period and it was collected in Caerwys, North Wales.

Rhomb porphyry thin section exhibiting the textbook porphyritic texture of this rare igneous rock. The thin section shows a fine grained alkali feldspar groundmass with large phenocrysts of augite. This material was collected near Oslo in Norway.

Amygdaloidal basalt thin section slide exhibiting amygdaloids of varying sizes within a fine grained basaltic ground mass. This particular material was collected from the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Microgranite thin section slide exhibiting the medium grained nature of this intrusive igneous rock. The crystals in microgranite are smaller than those of normal granite indicating that it cooled at a quicker rate.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Hornblende Gneiss thin section slide exhibiting an abundance of the mafic mineral hornblende, accompanied by less abundant biotite mica, quartz and feldspar. This material was collected by staff from Southern Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Travertine thin section slide. Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral rich springs, especially hot springs. It is formed by the rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate, often at the margins of a hot spring or in a limestone caves.

Big feldspar gabbro thin section exhibiting exactly what its name describes, feldspar crystals much larger than those present in the ordinary gabbro which we supply. Characteristic twinning in the plagioclase and the bright colours of the pyroxene make for an attractive thin section, perfect for educational use.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.
