Specimens of skarn rock containing epidote and garnet from Glen Cairn, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Skarns (also know as tactites) are a form of coarse grained metamorphic rock which forms when a high temperature igneous intrusion causes the contact metamorphism of a surrounding sedimentary carbonate rock. Skarns can vary greatly based upon the composition of the intrusion which formed them. Skarns are also metasomatic rocks meaning that a mineralogical or chemical replacement has taken place due to the presence of hydrothermal fluids, altering the rocks composition. These particular skarns contain garnet and epidote with some pieces containing small quantities of calcite. These peculiar specimens will certainly make an interesting addition to any collection, however they would also make an ideal teaching aid. Samples are supplied in a white card tray with an information label.
